To the Designers - How to Keep That MMORPG Market Fresh

I'd first of all like to file myself away among the millions of gamers who have (mis?)invested hundreds of days of playtime into the eternal timesink that the modern webosphere likes to call the massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG). There, I said it.

For me, as with most people, it started with an innocent-enough looking game: EverQuest. Originally, a friend suggested it to me in a casual conversation at work. I told him I'd been playing Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast and was thoroughly enjoying it and he guessed (correctly) that EverQuest would probably be right up my alley. Though my time playing EverQuest was short, I spent ungodly amounts of time on it's sequel, as well as equally monstrous amounts of time on everyone's favorite online game: World of Warcraft. Toss in a dash of Guild Wars, Dungeons and Dragons Online, City of Heroes and Silk Road Online and we've got a recipe for horrendous grades and social atrophy.

The unfortunate part of this story is that all of the games I listed are, in essence, exactly the same! Do away with the differences in graphics, network support and fees, and the silly user interfaces and you're left with exactly what all of the multi-user dungeon (MUD, those gnarly text-only games only those with stomachs of steel can tolerate) players have had for decades. I target you, I cast spell, server calculates resistances and diminishes the usefulness of my spell, spell hits you... ad naseum. These newer, graphics-based games all have their slight spin on this theme, but when it comes down to it, they're all the same at heart. When we look at these games with eyes as objective as we can possibly have, when we really look at these games at the "meta" level, we can see that all of the small differences between them are different manifestations of the same thing!

What I mean here is that there are several things which, like it or not, are common to what it is that makes an RPG. Then, there are things (again, like it or not) which are fundamental to an online game. Combine them and, you guessed it, you get a new set of things which are common to all (or at least many) online RPGs. What are these things, and what have they done to the current generation of online RPGs? Let's take a look.

1) Aesthetic comparison among players

This is arguably the most important aspect of any online game. In my experience, one of the necessary fuels to drive a person through the long grind ahead of them in any game is the wish to be compared as equals to a certain group of players far superior to themselves. Everyone wants to look like the hardcore raiders. The need for players to make quick comparison between themselves and other players manifests itself in today's games mostly as the ability to make a quick glance at another player's armor or transportation implement. For instance: in World of Warcraft, it's extremely easy to tell who's raided which zones (and for how long) simply by looking at the armor that they're wearing. At a much lower level, it's very easy to simply watch someone run past you and parse them visually either into the "regular mount" or "epic mount" group.

2) Manifestation of total time played

There are many things that make online gaming fun. The reasons are different for every player. In my opinion, however, a really big influence on the lower-level population of a gaming community is seeing what kinds of cool things those who've played the game for a long period of time have attained. This goes along very strongly with point #1, because essentially any items or status symbols which you've attained are correlated with the amount of time you've played.

Contrary to point #1, though, I believe that there is a "break point" where the manifestation of total time played and the aesthetic comparison among players is split. This point occurs at the level cap in most online games. For example, in EverQuest II, the level cap was traditionally 50. Players below 50 had as their main pursuit the attainment of this level cap. For players who had reached level 50, however, there was no additional way to project a signal as to their total time played in the form of a level. They had to apply that same amount of time used getting to 50 toward other pursuits, such as the acquisition of items unavailable to those of lower levels (or, available, but time consuming to retrieve). This point, #2, is stronger than #1 in that it encompasses the latter. Put simply: offline RPGs have an ending, with an end boss and credits. People stop playing once they reach this point, or at least are more likely to, because they have nothing to compare themselves to (except in the case where friends are playing the same game, but disregard that). In online games, however, the world is persistent, there are always new players, and always others to whom you may seem godlike. Clearly there is both an incentive to reach the top level (catch up with those ahead of you) and to remain at the top level and look for silly marginal upgrades.

3) Involuntary consumption of time for menial tasks

Running. Everyone hates running. You may think you like running, but that's just because you haven't had to do it very much. One of the main ways that games are differentiating themselves in the current MMORPG generation is through their implementation of player travel. World of Warcraft, for example, has a vast system of flight paths that allow players to travel between landmarks fairly quickly. There is still a finite travel time, and I'm sure they have their reasons. To contrast, Guild Wars has a system of cities and outposts among which you can travel instantly, given that your destination is a place you've already been. Much like the World of Warcraft system, it allows for designated travel between two well-defined locations, but the Guild Wars implementation is, in my opinion, very advantageous.

Other menial tasks include grinding, which I've already talked about in #2. Killing the same mob over and over by clicking a single button (or even a series of buttons) is the number one cause of alcoholism in the United States*.

Because I hate nay saying without the commensurate attempt at problem solving, I do have some ideas that game developers may or may not have already thought about as they begin development of a new generation of MMORPGs.

What can we do about this manifestation of total time played in the world? This problem will never end. Gaming companies, like all good businesses, are designed primarily to make money. Money is made by keeping customers and having those returning customers provide additional revenue. No rational company would forgo that (unless they've thought of something completely brilliant). However, maybe we could come up with something a bit better than raiding? Raiding is the same in every game. More people translates directly into less control of those who know what's going on, and the raid mobs and encounters have to be dumbed down to compensate. World of Warcraft started with 40-man raids, EverQuest II started with 24-man raids. I prefer the latter. But, why do people want to raid at all? To me, it's a manifestation of the want to increase your prowess and aesthetic charm by showing off your items to the newbs in the towns. Even if you don't want to show them the items, you want the items so that if it came down to you and them in a fight: you'd win.

How about a more single-player approach to the end game? I read a suggestion somewhere that RPGs would be better if their online component were approached in a manner more like Neverwinter Nights. It's primarily a single player game in which you can set up personal servers. So: why not come up with a system where users can start their own servers which are tightly coupled to the company's? That way, users can do what they want, be the best on their server, and compare to others if they want to? If the personal servers are tightly coupled to the company's, it would be very simple to alleviate security concerns through a pro-active patch system and very intolerant exploitation policy. Players could even move servers, or at least copy characters onto multiple servers (for a nominal fee?). Most of you are probably thinking open battle.net from the Diablo 2 days, but: if we've come so far in graphics, what's to think we haven't come a proportional distance in internet security and software distribution?

Imagine a more "dungeon siege"-y approach to the distributed gaming? Imagine a large public server like our beloved World of Warcraft and EverQuest II servers with the ability of characters to move on and off freely to private ones? How is that any different than what many First-person Shooter games are doing nowadays? I believe this type of solution attacks some of these problems at the core.

There are plenty of other ways to handle some of issues too. There are also way more issues. You can be sure that we'll try to tackle some of these in the future, but there's some food for thought!

With the market being saturated with games requiring cutting edge technology platforms and connections such as World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, Tabula Rasa, Warhammer, and Age of Conan, is there really a point to playing a 2d game? Even though the obvious answer may appear to be no, the real answer is an emphatic yes!

One of the main reasons people choose 2d mmorpgs over their 3d counterparts is because of system requirements and capabilities. To currently run World Of Warcraft one needs a pretty updated computer, not to mention graphics card; in comparison most 2d mmo's don't have strict minimum requirements and can be played by the masses, including countries that are just getting into the technology era. This is important as it allows users from all over to join in and get a true sense of community vs a game where it can only be played by the 'well-off' or richer areas of the world.

Besides a less strict requirement to play and bigger available player base, 2d games can give the user a "General's" mentality when playing the game. In 3d games one is often in first person view or very close to it and they can only see from that perspective. In a 2d mmorpg a user can see the whole screen/field and make decisions based on that. It tends to lead to a less stressful, more fullfilling experience as you see all around you.

Going back to technology, 2d games technology and artwork are pretty much mastered at this point, whereas 3d games are still evolving to become more real and less polygon like. A 2d game made today can have the best 2d graphics which could either look realistic or go for a clean/crisp/bright cartoon look; The ability to make the game as intentioned is a huge plus for 2d video games and games like diablo II, starcraft II, and revamped Ultima Online prove how great 2d graphics can now look.

Another huge advantage is movement and pvp. Currently 3d pvp is awkward and less related to movement on screen as compared with button mashing, unless you're playing a FPS. 2d games are easier to maneuver for now and give the user greater control over his character/avatar. This allows for more precision attacks and movement within the virtual world; old school ultima online is a classic example of how an easy interface, simple graphics, and movement made it one of the greatest pvp games of all time. In contrast, DAoC was laggy, buggy, and movement was very non user friendly. Five years later in World of Warcraft it has improved dramatically but the time/spatial relations in 3d have not been mastered so pvp in that environment will never be as consistent as that of a 2d game today.

To recap:

You don't need to buy the newest hardware to play and usually can play on a dial up as well.

The member base/community is larger due to less stringent hardware/network requirements and gives a more broad sense of community. No more just playing against rich people.

The art is mastered; the 2d graphics have been pushed to their limits and allow stunning visuals for both a realistic and cartoonish look.

Playability, movement, pvp; 2d games just allow the user to run his character like a general and pinpoint his moves. 3d is still evolving and figuring out what it can and can not do.

World of Warcraft currently entertains close to 7 million people world wide. It has drawn many of the mmorpg veterans but also introduced a lot of new people to the genre. Why is world of warcraft so successful? Well. I think it comes down to more than one thing.

First of MMORPGs are usually not that easy to get into, often the player is presented with a akward interface, tons of options and a lot of things going on around them in general the first time the log onto the game. Blizzard has done a pretty solid job in keeping the interface simple and stupid, allowing even newbie players to get into it at a quick pace. When the developers of the game created the interface, and gameplay in general their goal was for it to be easy to get into it, but to be hard to master.

Character Creation

The cartoony style may not be everyones cup of tea, but whether you like it or not you cannot dismiss that the world has a lot of character. It is filled with content too, and you will find yourself stumbling from point of interest to point of interest.

The dungeons

The dungeon instances, which are zones that belong to you and your group, while pretty linear most of the time are also amazingly done. The boss encounters are fun, and the best loot is gotten from doing instance runs. The dungeon instances are supposed to be the group part of the game (aside from pvp) and it would be unwise to enter them alone unless youre like 20 levels stronger than the mobs inside the dungeon.

The way to 60, and beyond

Most people ive talked to tell me they have the most fun leveling their characters to level 60, because it is quick paced most of the time, and only slows down rarely. The quests are done well, and there is just so much to discover.

Once you hit 60 youre basically stuck with three things to do though

a) do instance runs (raids) for items

b) grind monsters for money

c) pvp

Now this might sound as if it should be enough. But the core problem is this: there is no character advancement beyond 60 other than getting items. These items are gotten by raiding elite dungeons with your guild, playing the bazaar game or by gaining rank while pvping.

Right now, if youre a raider, you raid so you can raid more. There is no reason to take that super dagger of stabbing into a normal 5 man dungeons and just carnage stuff left and right, other than for the sake of carnageing - is that even a word.

The game at this point, 2 years after its release, direly needs some alternate advancement, luckily the expansion (The Burning Crusade) is right around the corner, so that should help out some for now.

Server Issues

This is were i have an axe to grind, so pardon my rant

Ever since wow was released , the game has had severe sever stability issues. I guess they did not expect the kind of amount of people to buy the game back then and got surprised. Not a big deal, most of the MMORPGs face server issues the first few days of the game's release, even if is not as popular as wow.

But even after 2 years of development it is sad and annoying to see that the same server problems still exist, while not as severe, and the servers need to go down for maintenance weekly.

Content Updates

We all know it, Blizzard likes to do things correctly, and they always take their time. The thing is, that this is a MMORPG. People need to be handed new content almost constantly, waiting 3-4 months between content updates that deliver content that was promised to be in the game when it was released just seems weak. Then again i can certainly appreciate the amount of work that must be needed to create the content. It wouldnt be so bad if there was actually some way of alternative character advancement.

This review may sound a bit harsh and dont get me wrong, WoW is an amazing game, and what the artists did is just mind boggling. I leveled 3 characters to level 60, and as i was progressing along through the vastly different world zones of the game there was always this thought on mind.

Wow is an amazing online world, but it is as if they do nothing with it. Where is the dynamic world, that i imagined when i first read about WoW in 2002. There has been a world event of the opening of a raid instance that involved the players gathering resources for a month or two and then battling in a war like scenario to unlock the dungeon. While this is definitely a step in the right direction it is not enough. Next generation MMORPGs need to be developed with dynamic behaviour in mind. The world needs to change and feel less static.

Fazit

World of warcraft is a great game, and you will definitely enjoy leveling your character. After that it is uncertain, you will have to see for yourself. There's a little RPG game on based upon the Nickelodeon animated TV series, Avatar: The Last Airbender that is available to play online.
The game is unfortunately not an adventure-based RPG game and is only a turn-based battle where you have to face up against one character and several of his minions. There's only one screen presented in front of you and all you have to do it pick which attack you want to execute, or to sit back and defend against your enemies' attacks.
The graphics of the game are exactly identical to the animation of the cartoon. Since everything takes place in one scene, it's great to see how detailed each character is. The attacks are well animated too with a mix of fire, water and other elemental types.
The one thing that may deter your enjoyment of the game is its hard learning curve and difficulty. You will have to plan and strategize your next moves carefully or else, the odds will certainly overwhelm you. Since you control Aang (the main protagonist) he's not all the powerful compared to your opponent Zuko.
It's also not fair that Zuko can summon more minions for himself and therefore, it takes even longer for you to defeat him as you'll have to dispatch attacks on his buddies too. The one helpful thing this game provides is that it will tell you when it is the best time to block. This was a lifesaver since there will be up to four or maybe five other people attacking you all at once.
The music can be a bit loud and annoying as well. Although it is supposed to be an epic orchestral piece supporting the heat of battle, I still felt the music was repetitive and not very soothing to the ears.
It will also take you a long time to defeat Zuko.
Since this is a turn-based RPG style battle, you will have to sit and wait until your enemies have all attacked first until you can fight back. Not to mention his life bar does not deplete at a fast pace. If you have the patience and skill to persevere in this game, then you may find some enjoyment to it.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is not a bad game, but it won't be for everyone's liking. RPG and fans of the animated show, will get the most fun out of this little online game. But if you're more into action style of gameplay, then I'd advise you to look elsewhere. The turn-based gameplay is just too slow for fighting game fans to enjoy.
