What are Online RPG Games?

If you play online games today you often see words and phrases such as MMO, RPG Game, MMORPG and others, but what do they all mean?
The acronym "RPG" stands for Role Playing Game. So, while saying RPG Game might not be grammatically correct, it is however a common method of referring to these types of games. Similarly, an MMO is a Massively Multiplayer Online game. These types of games are incredibly popular these days.

Examples of Modern RPG Games

Warcraft

World of Warcraft (WoW) is an example of a pay to play MMORPG that has gone from strength to strength over the last decade. Since the games release in 2005 Warcraft has gathered over 12 million active subscribers. It is considered to be the largest online RPG game in existence at the present time.

Wow has hundreds of quests to be completed and offers regularly updated end game content to keep you playing long after you have reached maximum level. The game world is large and has great depth.
Player vs player combat is a large part of Warcraft and Wow has made attempts over recent years to be considered as a true e-sport. The pursuit of recognition in this area meant that many changes to the game mechanics and the removal of many of the random factors that can give an unfair result to a match through sheer bad luck rather than a lack of skill.

Runescape

Runescape is another hugely successful online RPG game. Runescape is different to Warcraft in several ways, possibly the most important of these being that while Warcraft offers a free trial period, Runescape actually a version of the game that is permanently free. Runescape also plays in a browser and so requires no separate install unlike the many hundreds of megabytes of disk storage required to install WoW.

Additionally, Jagex offer a separate application on their homepage that actually does away with any separate download to start the game in a browser. The application merely checks the installed files against the current game files in use and if they are found to be the same the game starts. If there is a difference between the local files and the currently active files it then downloads any updates necessary and starts the game. All of this is carried out automatically and so the game remains extremely simple to play and enjoy.

This simplicity of play and small installation size is not without its drawbacks however. Runescape has won many awards for the excellent standard of its Java programming, but the graphics are somewhat simple and dated looking when compared to many modern RPG games.

Other Types of RPG Games Online

There are literally hundreds of free role playing games online today. Many of them capable of being played in the browser window, as a free download. Although these games lack the immersive graphics of the larger commercial products they frequently have no lack of addictive or interesting gameplay and have much to recommend them.
